“Heat Waves and Short Fuses: How to Stay Cool When Everything’s Boiling Over”

Let’s call it what it is: this heat is making people crazy.
You're sweating through your shirt, your car feels like an oven, and the world is suddenly filled with folks who don’t know how to merge. If you’ve noticed tempers flaring this week—yours included—it’s not just you.

As a therapist who believes in being real with my clients: hot weather can mess with your mood in ways you didn’t expect. There’s science behind it, sure—but also just plain old discomfort that wears down your patience.

So what do we do about it?
We get intentional. Here’s how:

1. Lower the Bar (Just a Little)

When it’s this hot, everything takes more effort—so give yourself (and others) some slack. This isn’t the week to expect peak productivity or emotional perfection. Call it “heat grace.”

2. Hydrate and Hide (When You Can)

Water and shade are your emotional regulation tools right now. Stay hydrated and take mini-retreats—five minutes in front of a fan, a cool washcloth on your neck, or a quick escape to air conditioning.

3. Check Your Heat Triggers

The heat amplifies what’s already simmering. Are you mad at your partner—or just hot and overstimulated? Before you snap, ask: “Is this about them or the weather?”

4. Use Humor, Not Horns

Traffic jams? Power outages? Snapping won’t cool anything down—but a funny playlist, cold drink, or sarcastic group text might. Humor is a coping skill, not a luxury.

5. Remember This Is Temporary

Just like everything else in life, this heat wave will pass. Hang onto your sanity and your relationships until it does.

One Last Thought:

You’re not weak for feeling overwhelmed—you’re human. And sweaty. And tired of hearing the word “heat index.”

You don’t have to handle it all perfectly. You just need to handle it with intention, a little laughter, and maybe a popsicle.

Need help managing stress beyond the heat?
I’m here for that too. Virtual and in-person therapy available.
